The digital watermarking process involves embedding certain information into a protected digital object (such as still images, video, audio, etc.) that can prove copyright ownership or track infringement (e.g., author's serial number, company logo, meaningful text, etc.). Unlike traditional encryption systems, the primary purpose of digital watermarking technology is not to restrict access to the media, but to ensure that the watermark within the media is not altered or removed.
